In this video, we are going to explain to you that how to calculate brickwork of foundation according to the drawing. after watching this video you will be able to learn Estimation of Brickwork Foundation of Building(Bricks Calculation)
In This article, we are going to study Bricks Calculation that is how to calculate the quantity of brickwork in the foundation of a building using AutoCAD. Brickwork Foundation is the foundation provided for the wall of the building. It is constructed below the plinth level i.e. Below the Ground Level. This foundation is made up of brick masonry.
Calculation of Quantity of Brickwork in foundation
For Bricks Calculation the quantity of brickwork in the foundation of a building, we have to first study and analyze the given drawing of foundation from both views i.e.
- Top view / Layout Plan

Fig- 1 Foundation Layout Plan
In This Plan you will see that FW1 represents the area where brick work is done.
FW1- Foundation Wall 1
- Cross section view

In this view you will see the foundation of 9 inch thick brick wall. The foundation is constructed in steps above PCC. There are 4 steps provided of various width and thickness.
To find out the Bricks Calculation, we have to first find out three things
- Length of the brick wall
- Width of the brick wall
- Depth/ Thickness of the brick wall
First we have to find the length of the wall, the length of the wall can be calculated by analysis the layout plan/ top view.
In top view of drawing we have to determine the length of the wall using AutoCAD.
See the figure below.

Fig. 3
Now as you know the brickwork is done from column to column. So by using dimension command in autocad we find the distance between column to column and then we add all the distance.
In fig. you seen than the distance between the column of F1 footing and column of F3 footing is 10 feet 2 inch. And the distance between the column of F3 footing and F2 footing is 18 Feet 3 Inch. As shown in fig. 3
Similarly you will find all the Distance between Column to Column and add all the distance which is made our required length.
The complete length of the wall is 215.33 Feet
Now, to find out width and thickness of wall we have to study the cross section view , the width and thickness of each step is given in the drawing.
So all the three things i.e. Length, width, thickness are available now to find out the quantity of brick work
Step1- Calculate the Quantity of brickwork in step 1 which is just above the PCC
Length = 215.33 ft
Width=1ft 10.5inch= 1.875ft
Thickness= 6 inch = 0.5ft
Quantity of brickwork for 1 step = length x Width x Depth
= 215.33 x 1.875 x 0.5
= 201.87 Cubic Feet
=or it is Equal to 5.72 Cum
Step 2- Calculate the Quantity of brickwork in Step 2 which is just above Step 1
Length = 215.33 ft
Width=1ft 6 inch= 1.5ft
Thickness= 6 inch = 0.5ft
Quantity of brickwork for 1 step = length x Width x Depth
= 215.33 x 1.5 x 0.5
= 161.49 Cubic Feet
=or it is Equal to 4.577 Cum
Step 3- Calculate the Quantity of brickwork in Step 3 which is just above Step 2.
Length = 215.33 ft
Width=1ft 1.5 inch= 1.125ft
Thickness= 6 inch = 0.5ft
Quantity of brickwork for 1 step = length x Width x Depth
= 215.33 x 1.125 x 0.5
= 121.12 Cubic Feet
=or it is Equal to 3.433 Cum
Step 4- Calculate the Quantity of brickwork in Step 4 which is just above Step 3.
Length = 215.33 ft
Width = 9 inch
Now in Step 4 You have to find the thickness/ depth because it is not given directly.
Thickness =(total depth above step 3 –depth of beam – dpc thickness)
= 4ft – 1ft 3 inch -2 inch
= 2.5834 ft
Quantity of brickwork for 1 step = length x Width x Depth
= 215.33 x 0.75x 2.5834
= 417.21 Cubic Feet
=or it is Equal to 11.825 Cum
Total quantity of brickwork of all the steps = (Step1 +Step2+Step3+ step4)
=(5.72+ 4.577 + 3.433 + 11.825)
=25.555 cum
Now, we have to calculate number of bricks in this quantity
According to Bureau of Indian Standards, 1 Cum of Brickwork Contain 500 Bricks
Therefore, 25.555 cum Quantity of brickwork contains
= 25.555 x 500
= 12777.5 numbers of bricks
